Early Years

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Somerville Primary School
Our Early Years provision is a vibrant and nurturing place where children begin their Somerville journey. We are proud to offer a 104‑place Nursery, with 52 morning places and 52 afternoon places, as well as a three‑form‑entry Reception, giving every child the space, support and encouragement they need to thrive.
Nursery and Reception at Somerville
Children joining our EYFS begin to develop the essential skills, curiosity and confidence that will support them throughout their school life. In Reception, pupils continue to build on the strong foundations laid in Nursery, engaging in rich, purposeful learning experiences within a warm and stimulating environment.
Our Approach to Early Years Learning
The Early Years differs from Key Stage 1 and 2, with a strong focus on exploration, independence and learning through play. Our curriculum follows the revised Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, ensuring that every child is supported to learn at their own pace.
We recognise that children enter Reception with a wide range of experiences and starting points. By understanding each child’s interests, needs and stage of development, we create engaging and challenging opportunities that help them grow across all areas of learning.
Areas of Learning in the EYFS
The EYFS curriculum is organised into three prime areas and four specific areas:

Working in Partnership with Parents
At Somerville, we believe that children make the best progress when school and home work closely together. Throughout the year, we offer a range of opportunities for parents and carers to be involved in their child’s learning journey. This includes workshops that explain key areas of the EYFS curriculum, parents’ evenings to discuss progress and next steps, and work showcases where families can come in to celebrate the children’s achievements. We also have regular achievement assembly's and provide bespoke workshops focused on early reading, writing and maths.
